Sago as a Leading Commodity of Penarah Village

Meanwhile, Penarah Village has great potential in sago, one of the local food sources in the region. Sago holds high economic value, especially when processed into derivative products that can be marketed more widely. Sago-based products, such as sago flour and traditional sago-based foods, have become part of the local culture and can be further developed as a leading commodity.

The Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business UNJA, Prof. Dr. Shofia Amin, S.E., M.Si., stated that sago has the potential to become an export commodity that could drive the village's economy. “We hope that related study programs at UNJA can collaborate with Universitas Karimun and Penarah Village in developing sago into value-added products ready to compete in the global market. Modern and innovative sago processing could open new market opportunities and increase the income of the local community,” she said. Through this collaboration, Penarah Village is expected to expand the market for sago commodities. This effort is also hoped to improve the welfare of the people in both villages through sustainable local resource-based economic empowerment.

Organic Farming in Penarah Village offers an environmentally friendly solution by reducing the use of synthetic chemicals in farming. The application of organic fertilizers not only helps improve soil fertility and crop productivity but also fosters the formation of a sustainable agricultural ecosystem that supports the concept of a green economy.

Meanwhile, according to Hardiani, Dwi Hastuti, and Parmadi, hydroponic technology provides an innovative solution to overcome land limitations in coastal villages like Tanjung Hutan. This technology allows farmers to grow crops without soil, using only nutrient-enriched water while minimizing overall water usage. As a result, plants grow faster and are of higher quality, supporting local economic growth and strengthening environmental sustainability.

Participants and Invited Guests of the Community Service

Students were actively involved in community service activities aimed at empowering the welfare of coastal tourism villages. Their contributions included research and analysis of the local economy, farming practices, and the potential benefits of organic farming and hydroponic technology. Students also played a role in community engagement, working with village residents to educate and raise awareness about sustainable farming practices and the importance of using organic fertilizers.

Additionally, students organized training sessions and applied them to community members to adopt organic farming techniques and hydroponic systems. They also participated in the practical implementation of these farming methods, ensuring that the community could effectively utilize the new technologies. Furthermore, students contributed to the continuous assessment of the project's outcomes, ensuring goals were met and providing feedback for improvement. Through these various activities, students not only contributed to empowering the coastal tourism village’s economy but also gained practical experience and valuable insights into community development and sustainable practices.

The collaboration between Universitas Jambi and Universitas Karimun aims to empower village communities through sustainable agricultural innovations while serving as a successful case study in developing the green economy in rural areas. This collaboration also includes training and mentoring the local community so they can manage their natural resources independently and effectively.(*)
